Hello Subbuteo lovers! We shouldn't say it but WE DO RECOMMEND to read carefully this "10 For You" interview x ACTUALLY SUBBUTEO because it will show you what is the true love about Subbuteo! Without adding any word we introduce you Filippo from Italy !!

1)Chi Sei, cosa fai e perche' la tua vita e' correlata al Subbuteo ?

Ciao sono Filippo Caselli nasco nel 1973 nella meravigliosa Ferrara, città degli Estensi, del castello immerso nell'acqua di Ludovico Ariosto, Torquato Tasso e Savonarola, dei cappellacci di zucca e la salama da sugo ma soprattutto città della S.P.A.L., la squadra del mio cuore.

Sono un tecnico luci, lavoro nel mondo dello spettacolo e da qualche anno il mio girovagare mi ha portato a trasferirmi a Trieste, altra fantastica città.  

Perchè la mia vita è correlata al Subbuteo?? bhe è facile risponderti, perchè è il gioco più bello che c'è !!! 

1)Who are you, what do you do, where are you from and how's your life related to Subbuteo? 

Hello! I'm Filippo Caselli born in 1973 in the wonderful Ferrara, Estensi's city, the castle immersed in the Ludovico Ariosto's water, Torquato Tasso and Savonarola, the Pumpink's Cappellacci and the Salama da Sugo but especially it's the city of my favourite team ever: S.P.A.L. ! I works as a light technician, I work in the Show Business and my trips brought me to move to Trieste now, another wonderful place. Why is my life related to Subbuteo?? Well that's easy to answer, it's because it is the most beautiful game in the world!

2)Qual'e' il tuo primo ricordo del Subbuteo ? (La tua prima volta)

Avrò avuto nove o dieci anni, il figlio diciottenne di amici di famiglia, in partenza per il militare, mi regalò il suo Subbuteo: tavola, squadre, porte, palloni... insomma tutto il necessario per intraprendere questo fantastico viaggio. Ricordo come se fosse ieri la mia prima volta: squadre rigorosamente hw, me ne diede diverse, le mie preferite erano il Brasile ed una strana che non conoscevo, ma mi piaceva da matti (ref 209 West Ham utd.). Non sapevo bene le regole, ma non era un grosso problema allora, presto coinvolsi gli amici che come me si innamorarono subito del calcio in miniatura. Ricordo che a quel tempo la mia famiglia stava ristrutturando casa e noi ci impossessammo di un ala del palazzo dove ancora non vi erano i lavori e così, una stanza vuota, si trasformò nel nostro quartier generale, partite partite e ancora partite, era impossibile tirarci fuori da lì dentro.

2)What's your first memory about Subbuteo ? (your first time)

I was probably 9 or 10 years old when a family's friend son was leaving for military duties and gave me his Subbuteo as a gift: pitch table, teams, goals, balls.. anyway all the tools you need in order to get started in this amazing "trip". I remember it clearly as my first time was yesterday: HW teams (my fav one was Brazil and another one which was weird but I didn't know about it Ref.209 West Ham United). I didn't know the rules well but it wasn't a big deal at that time and I was able to involve my friends who fell in love with the game at their first glance! I remember my family was fixing the house at that time and we occupied a building's wing where still there were no workers  so one of the empty room became our Head Quarter. Matches after matches... it was impossible to get us out of that room.

3)  Sei un Collezionista di Subbuteo? Spendi qualche parola sulla tua collezione.

La collezione.... per parlarne devo per forza tornare ancora indietro negli anni, verso i quindici sedici, quando inizi a volere il motorino e quando ti rendi conto che al mondo esistono anche le ragazze e così purtroppo ti allontani dal panno verde, ebbene, successe anche a me, finì tutto in cantina e sparso nei vari garage degli amici di allora, dove i nostri eroi basculanti restarono relegati fino a qualche anno fa, esattamente quando i colleghi tecnici che erano in tournèe con me, forse stanchi di sentirmi parlare di com'era bello il Subbuteo, decisero per il mio compleanno di regalarmi la nuova edizione (quella con gli omini infrangibili, orrendi). Ricordo che aprii il pacco ed ebbi un tonfo al cuore. Lì per lì non mi resi bene conto di cosa stesse per succedermi, ma una volta tornato a casa finita la tournèe, chiamai mio nipote, all'epoca ancora piccolino e gli dissi "Guarda cosa mi hanno regalato", aprii il panno, lo stesi sul tavolo, ci appoggiai sopra le porte ed i giocatori ed appena vidi rotolare la pallina mi resi finalmente conto che ero ritornato in quella stanza, il nostro quartier generale, e che se anche quel posto non esisteva più, io in realtà non ne ero mai uscito per davvero!!!

Da lì alla collezione il passo fu brevissimo, richiamai tutti i vecchi amici, feci il giro di tutte le nostre cantine e garage, soffitte e vari sottoscala polverosi e recuperai quegli eroi basculanti addormentati da tempo. Ora possiedo circa 600 squadre tra lw ed hw più tutti i vari accessori, per fortuna a casa ho una stanza tutta mia dove custodire il mio tesoro verde.

3)Are you also a Subbuteo collector ?

The collection.. in order to talk about it I must go back in time once again, when I was 15 or 16 years old when I started to feel like I needed a motor bike and when you realise that there are also the women on this earth and so you detach yourself from the green cloth. It happened to me too and everything ended up in the basement and in my friend's garages, where the little players spent several years before seeing light again few years ago when my co workers were just too tired of hearing my Subbuteo stories and decided to gave me a new edition Subbuteo set (the one with those horrible players) as a birthday gift. I do remember as soon as I opened the gift my heart was shaking. In the moment I wasn't really understanding what was going on but as soon as I finished my tour (job) I called my nephew and told him: << Look what they gave me as a gift!>>. I opened the green cloth, put it on the table, fixing the goals and the players on the pitch and when I saw the ball rolling over it I suddenly realized that I was still in THAT room and I probably never really left that place inside me. From that point to the collection the step wasn't that long. I called back all my friends, did the whole round of all the dusty basements and garages and got back around 600 teams  (LW and HW) plus all the accessories and luckily I have an entire room dedicated to Subbuteo at my place.

4)Hai mai partecipato ad eventi Subbuteo ? Se si quali ? ed inoltre ci puoi dare qualche dritta su dove acquistare Subbuteo in Italia e all'estero ? (se avessi degli indirizzi sarebbero graditi)

Non ho mai partecipato ad eventi ufficiali, anche se i nostri tornei avevano per noi l'ufficialità di un vero mondiale. Conosco i ragazzi del club di Ferrara (Subbuteo Estense Giocatori Affiliati - S.E.G.A. ) che sono molto attivi e organizzano tornei a livello nazionale. Purtroppo non vivendo più a Ferrara non posso presenziare spesso, ma quando posso passo a salutarli sempre volentieri. Cito il presidente Nicola Deleonardis per tutti Delez, autore di diversi libri sul Subbuteo e vero promotore del gioco a punta di dito.

Io cerco Scatole verdi ovunque: mercatini, rigattieri, svuotacantine, vecchi negozi di giocattoli oramai sempre più rari.

Un tempo era facile trovare squadre. Io andavo da Puccio, storico negozio di Ferrara. Aveva una saletta interamente dedicata al Subbuteo (pelle d'oca a ripensarci) oppure alla Gioia dei Bimbi, quest'ultmo negozio era proprio vicino a casa mia, sono tuttora convinto che mia mamma facesse il giro più lungo per tornare a casa per evitare di passarci davanti altrimenti erano lotte per farmi uscire da lì dentro. Ora con Facebook ci sono mille gruppi di compravendita, c'è e-bay, ci sono mercatini dedicati. Un amico di Certaldo ha addirittura aperto un negozio di solo Subbuteo, il Subbuteo lab. Da quel che so, ha lasciato il lavoro per dedicarsi a tempo pieno al nostro hobby preferito.

(Conosciamo bene Dany Mancuso :D E' stata la prima persona che abbiamo intervistato!!) 

Grazie a questi gruppi, oltre a trovare squadre e accessori, si trovano un sacco di amici tutti con la medesima passione e di tutte le parti del mondo. E' inutile sottolinearlo, ma il Subbuteo sta tornando alla grande!!! 

4)Did you ever take part in Subbuteo events ? If Yes which one ? also where can we buy Subbuteo Items in your city ? Addresses are much appreciated for our followers


I never took part in Official Subbuteo events even if our tournaments were not worthing less for us as much as a real World Cup! I know the guys of the Ferrara Subbuteo Club (Subbuteo Estense Giocatori Affiliati -S.E.G.A.) who are very active and organize National tournaments. Unfortunately I cannot take part in those much anymore since Im not living there but I pass by the club from time to time to say hi. I would like to mention the president Nicola Deleonardis, alias DELEZ, author of several Subbuteo's books and a real promoter of the finger's tip game.
I look for green boxes everywhere: markets, vintage and antiques stores, old toys store (Which are becoming a rarity).
It was much easier to find Subbuteo products in the past. I used to go to PUCCIO, an historical Ferrara's store. It had an entire room dedicated to Subbuteo (I get the goosebumps if I think about it) or at the GIOIA DEI BAMBINI, another toys' store near where I lived. Im still quite sure my mother used to do a bigger round to go home in order to avoid fighting with me for getting stuck in that place.

There are tons of groups on Facebook now, there's Ebay and there are dedicated markets and fairs. I have a friend in Certaldo which even opened a Subbuteo store , the Subbuteo Lab. For what I know of he left his job in for giving all his time and passion to our favourite hobby!

Thanks to these groups besides finding lots of teams and accessories you can also meet a lot of new Subbuteo friends from all over the world. It's useless to say it but Subbuteo is coming back big time!

A questa domanda direi che ho già risposto no??!! hahahhahaha scherzi a parte, oramai il Subbuteo è parte integrante della mia vita.

I think I already answered to this question right ?!? ahahhaahhaha Besides jokes Subbuteo is totally part of my life.

6)Qual'e' la tua squadra preferita ?

La mia squadra preferita non può che essere la S.P.A.L., ossia la ref 3 del catalogo. Ce l'ho in diverse versioni lw hw originali ed altre fatte dai vari maestri di pennello o di decals. Queste ultime sono davvero rifinite in tutti i particolari con nomi e sponsor, davvero bellissime, ma la più bella che ho, l'ho trovata un paio di anni fa grazie ad un amico di Padova (uno dei miei pusher di Subbuteo, il mitico Denis): una ref 3 in box 63000 con la la sola dicitura S.P.A.L. e l'azzurro delle righe un pò più chiaro del solito, ma proprio uguale a quello originale. Sulla scatola c'è ancora l'adesivo di Puccio, ricordate il negozio di giocattoli dove andavo da bimbo, bhe viene proprio da lì. Adesso non dico che quando la vidi piansi, ma ci mancò veramente poco.
Ora vi racconto una storia a riguardo, che non so se essere vera o leggenda, ma io la credo vera: questa scatola sotto la ref ne ha un altra dove si intravedono i soliti nomi della ref 3, ossia: w.b.a., Entella, Espanol, Real Societad. La leggenda vuole che i rappresentanti Subbuteo avessero una piccola etichettatrice tipo macchina da scrivere e facessero la varie ref direttamente in negozio.

6)What's your favourite team ?

My favourite team is definitely S.P.A.L. ref.3 in the catalogue. I got it in several versions LW,HW and  also others made by Subbuteo artists masters or in decals. The Decals are really well done with all the little details as names, sponsors, really stunning but the most beautiful ones was the one I found couple of years ago thanks to a friend from Padova (One of my Subbuteo's pusher - I think WE know who's the guy :D) : Ref.3 inside a 63000 box with the lone written S.P.A.L. and the light blue stripes slightly brighter than usual but really the same as the original one. There was even still the PUCCIO's sticker on it (remember the store I mentioned above? It came from that place!) Now Im not going to say that I cried  as soon as I saw it but I was almost getting that point.

I can even tell you a little story about it even if I am not sure it's 100% true but I believe it is: Under the box's ref sticker there was another one where you could read names like ref.3 W.B.A., Entella, Espanyol, Real Sociedad. The Legend says that the Subbuteo's agents and representatives used to have a labeling machine and were doing the refs directly in the store!

7) Qual'e' secondo te la squadra piu' rara ? 

La squadra più rara?? Quella che devo ancora trovare!! hahahahaha ... ce ne sono di rarissime che credo, come il Santo Gral, non si troveranno mai. Addirittura squadre che seppur presenti in catalogo, nessuno ha mai visto. Mistero come i numeri mancanti nel catalogo tipo la 395 e la 396 lw o dalla 406 alla 409 ecc.  

C'è una sorta di rating (IL MINGARDO RATING) è un po vecchio, ma lo usano tutti e alla fine fa fede .... va da 1 a 6 come grado di rarità; il grado 6 è anche detto "scordati di lei" per sottolinearne la difficoltà nel trovarla. Io qualcuna c'è l'ho, sono riuscito a trovare tutte le scudettate e tutte le speciali (edizione sia hw prima che lw poi fatta con le scatole long colorate con i colori dei vari club). 

Me ne mancano alcune versioni, ma le squadre le ho tutte, si perchè il mondo Subbuteo, soprattutto quando si parla di collezione, è fatto di mille varianti: una righina in più, un colore un po diverso, può fare la differenza e il vero "malato" le vuole avere tutte !!! Ah dimenticavo le Pelebol, la versione Subbuteo carioca. Me l'ha data in concessione l'amico Bruno di Monfalcone, assieme a qualche altra chicca tipo la 345 Ajaccio. A proposito di collezionisti, a casa sua vidi il maggior numero di squadre nello stesso posto tutte assieme, mi ci volle una giornata per vederle tutte (adesso la maggior parte di quelle sono a casa mia ...Grazie Bruno, ogni tanto lo ripeto tra me e me )

7)Which one is the rarest Subbuteo team for you ?

The rarest team?? The one I still have to find !! lololololo there are many rare teams, like the Holy Grail, that you will probably never find. There are even teams that despite are present in the catalogue none ever seen them in real life! A mistery just like the missing refs numbers like 395 or 396 LW or from the 406 till the 409 and so on.

There's a sort of Rating on line (Mingardo rating), a bit old but still very used nowadays which gives a rarity value from 1 to 6. The grade 6 is "Forget about it" to underline how hard is to find it. I got some of them. I also managed to find all the Badge teams and the Specials ones (HW and LW editions - the latter made with the longer box coloured as the Club's colours). I still miss few versions but I have all the teams, Yes , because when you talk about Collection in the Subbuteo World there are thousands variations: a small added stripe, a different colour, can make a difference and the really "sick" collector wants them all! Oh I was almost forgetting the Peleboll, the Carioca's Subbuteo version. I got it from my friend Bruno from Montefalcone together with some other great team like ref.345 Ajaccio. Talking about collectors I remember I saw the highest number of teams ever all in the same place. I needed a day to see them all (Most of them are at my place now.. Thanks Bruno, I still repeat this  to myself from time to time)

8) Sei un forte giocatore di Subbuteo ? 

No, non sono forte e non sono per l'agonismo; adoro giocare, ma non mi interessa vincere, certo quando vinco è bello ma è bellissimo giocare, anche se prendi di quattro goal. Con il mio lavoro, che mi porta spesso via da casa per lunghi periodi, è difficile giocare spesso, ma quando capita è una vera goduria. Oltre giocare, una cosa che adoro fare, sono i modellini della curva della S.P.A.L.( essendo un super tifoso, ma abitando lontano, non sempre posso andare allo stadio e allora mi sfogo così) rigorosamente con materiale Subbuteo, ma con l'aggiunta di sciarpe bandiere e striscioni fatti da me. Adesso ne sto facendo una bellissima che regalerò al capo redattore di Rai sport, un altro malato Spallino e di Subbuteo, che per lavoro e distanza è lontano dal vivere lo stadio e allora la curva, o almeno il modellino, andrà a casa sua .

8)Are you a strong Subbuteo player? Have you ever won any tournaments/championships etc. ? If YES which ones?

No, Im not a strong player and I am not interested in the competition side of it. I love to play Subbuteo but I'm not interested in winning. Of course when you win it's nice but it's amazing just playing with it even if you lose by four goals. It's hard to play often because of my job that keeps me away from home but when I get to play I really enjoy it. Besides playing there's another thing I love to do: creating the S.P.A.L. Corner Terraces using Subbuteo equipment (Since I am a great Spal supporter but living out of the city I don't get to go to the stadium much so I show my support this way). I add scarves and banner to the spectators/supporters made by myself. Im currently working on a stunning reproduction of it which I will give as a gift to the Chief Editor of RAI SPORT, another "sick" Spal and Subbuteo supporter, which can't go to the stadium so at least I bring part of it to his place.

Ma come??!! Abbiamo già finito???!!! Andrei avanti ore a parlare di Subbuteo....

Non mi faccio io una domanda, ma vi ripeto quella che mi fa spesso mia moglie (santa donna) "Venderai mai la tua collezione???" 

se volete lascio a voi la risposta.........   

Vi lascio con un consiglio: quando vi capita di trovare delle squadre, intendo dal vivo, non in rete, annusatele, io lo faccio sempre se è originale soprattutto se si parla di HP(dipinta a mano) hanno il tipico odore di vecchio quello buono di cantina ammuffita... bhe in quel caso prendetela ad occhi chiusi !!!!

How?! We already finished ?!! I could talk hours about Subbuteo. I'm not going to ask myself a question but I repeat you what my wife often ask me (She's a saint) << Are you ever going to sell your collection ??>> I leave you the answer if you want ....

I leave an advice to you: When you find yourself in front of a real Subbuteo team smell it! I do it all the time especially if they are original and  hand painted. You will smell the old odours of mouldy basement. In that case just buy it !
