Penalty perfectly shot by Jedinak. He never missed one for Australia. 1-1 and that was the first half. At 51' it was Poulsen who fell down in the area but there was no foul nor Var intervention. Somehow you could tell that Australia were looking for the victory since their presence in the Denmark part of the field increased a lot even if one of the most dangerous chances was a great shot by Pione Sisto at 71'. Before that there were couple of chaotic situations cleared out of the box by Danish defenders. As always Kasper Schmeichel started to become a protagonist making a serie of saves, most important ones at 87'. The match was entertaining and finished 1-1.
Second match of the day was France Vs Peru'. Some old style flavours around here. You might remember the fantastic Subbuteo Ref.455 LW Peru' team :) (We got it in our collection) . Good to see them back in a World Cup. It was a great match anyway. The first half was very high on speed and a Peru not scared at all by the stature of their opponents. Indeed they produced a lot but also showing their limits in the offensive area. At 11' was very dangerous the far range shot by Paul Pogba which actually went out just a bit. Couple of minutes after Varane's header goes slightly wide! The defender could have done much better in this corner kick situation considering is good position. Peru's goalkeeper Gallese did some saves too but the hardest one was by Lloris on a powerful Guerrero's shot. The Peruvian easily eluded Umtiti's tight marking before firing. Meanwhile Mbappe showed a lot of high class! Considering he was the youngest ever man on the pitch in the History of France with his 19 years old. It was the Golden Kid to score as well! Perfectly ready to deposit the 1-0 (34') ball in a completely empty goal after a Gallese's save on Giroud. Hernandez (42') almost doubled the lead but again Gallese was ready to save his attempt. That was it for the first 45 minutes.
After 5 minutes of the second half Pedro Aquino shot a rocket towards Lloris (100 caps for him today) but the ball went on the crossbar before fading away! Great chance! Despite few attempts by Carrillo and Advincula still the Peru didn't great any huge chance but attacked a lot and Lloris had some extra work to do. Peru probably deserved a goal. At 82' Dembele had the 2-0 ball but badly fired wide.... such a shameful shot. It looked easier to score than to miss. The full time was 1-0!
Closed the match day the fascinating clash between Argentina and Croatia! After watching the first half you were probably sweating most of the time. Very intense match full of fouls and fake fouls. Many players should get Oscar nomination. The biggest chances were for Perisic who saw his ball deflected by Caballero the centimetre enough to avoid the goal(5'). At 12'Perez lobbed a ball over the Croatia defenders and strangely Messi didn't manage to make some magic and score instead he didn't reach the ball. Lionel seemed a bit lost in the first half. At 22' a powerful run by Acuna terminated with a sort of cross-shot which almost beat Subasic (ball went on the top part of the bar before going out). The best chance was on Perez's foot. After a defensive mistake by the Croatian Perez is almost alone to shoot with an empty goal but incredibly put the ball on the external net. That was a huge miss. Mandzukic replied with another great miss when he was left all alone but his header was directed out of the goal. Lucky Caballero in this occasion. Right before the whistle Rebic somehow didn't control the ball well before shooting over the bar. It was a good counter-attack assisted by Modric but he missed the chance. 0-0 after 45 minutes.
The second half gave the whole world witness something almost unbelievable. At 53' Caballero incredibly slipped the ball totally giving away the 1-0. Rebic was there all alone to smash the ball behing the poor keeper who just reached Karius and De Gea in the recent performances. This might beat them all. This goalkeeper was about to condemn an entire nation. From this point you will see several not really dangerous attacks from both except an amazing save on the line by Subasic (62').But guess what at 80' Modric's firecracker finished behind Caballero who seemed pretty static once again. Fantastic goal by Modric anyway , 2-0 and Argentina are probably packing their bag by now. Fights, words, nervous players of course was also the perfect situation for Croatia to control the match. Even Rakitic got the bar directly from free kick at 85' before scoring the 3-0 at 90'+1'. Bye Bye Argentina ? Probably and by the way Messi did absolutely nothing. SHAME ON YOU ARGENTINA and especially SAMPAOLI who ruined it all.
